Dental Implants Are A Boon For Senior Citizens

May 15, 2018Dr. FlemingDental Implants

It’s widely believed that senior citizens aren’t the perfect candidate for dental implants, and instead they’re better off relying on removable dentures or bridges for missing teeth. But alas, this misconception doesn’t have an age limit. As a matter of fact, the elderly are most likely to be an ideal candidate as their teeth have aged and undergone several treatments and procedures over the years. The old is making a comeback for dental implants. If they meet all the health requirements, there’s absolutely no reason senior citizens can’t replace a missing tooth with a new natural dental implant.

Long time denture wearers are known to suffer shrinkage of the their jawbone, which ultimately impacts their facial structure and even how they speak. For seniors, dental implants can solve many of their problems with loose-fitting dentures. Not only will they correct their outer appearance, but with the implants fixed right into the jawbone, they’ll also help maintain the integrity of the jaw. It’s not always the age of the person, but the status of the jawbone that determines their candidacy for dental implants.

Why A Senior Person’s Health Factors In

As I’ve already mentioned the integrity of the jawbone and its importance, I’ll address other health factors that also need to be tended to prior to receiving a dental implant. The gap in your teeth is one thing, yet what is happening to the surrounding gums and the adjacent teeth near the site of a missing tooth is another problem altogether. Any medical procedure in a senior citizen’s health history has to be documented, as it could impact the health of the gums which need to be in good condition prior to an implant placement.

Seniors who have worn dentures for years-especially lower dentures-often find that their dentures don’t fit as well as they used to. If a senior has been on several medications for other health conditions, or has undergone procedures that might compromise their overall health, this will ultimately weigh in on the fate of the dental implant.

In order to ensure your candidacy, gums must be free of gingivitis and heart conditions need to be discussed with your dentist. If you suffer from high blood pressure, it could provide answers as to why your teeth and/or gums don’t heal as rapidly after treatment. Here are some tips to remember as you enter your golden years:

  • Dental visits, exams, and cleanings become priority.
  • Maintain proper oral hygiene with regular brushing and flossing.
  • Watch for any changes in your overall health. Dental problems might be a cause.
  • Remain active and keep the bones healthy.
  • Take necessary supplements to support jawbone and gum health. Calcium and Vitamin D are the two essential supplements.
  • Eat a regular balanced diet, one that you enjoy and one that provides proper nourishment.
  • Stress relief. As you age, you worry more and that plays a role on your dental health.
  • Sleep. The essential ingredient for restoration and helping the body heal.
