Many Patients Have Common Questions

While every patient’s dental needs are entirely different, a lot of the questions people have about dental implants tend to be similar. Questions about the experience, the steps and surgeries, the length of the process, and others are so commonly brought up, that we’ve listed them for our patients to peruse at their convenience.

Dental Implant FAQ’s

Is it painful to get dental implants?
How many surgeries are involved with dental implants?
I have dentures – Can I still upgrade to dental implants?
If I have gum disease can I still get dental implants?
How long does the dental implant process take?
Is it painful to get dental implants?
The dental implant procedure itself involves little to no pain. Dr. Fleming will administer local anesthesia that will help dull any pain during the surgery. When recovering from implant placement, patients often experience soreness, swelling, or discomfort. To keep you comfortable in the first few days following your surgery, Dr. Fleming will prescribe medication to help manage any pain.

How many surgeries are involved with dental implants?
The dental implant procedure involves two surgeries with a recovery period in between. The first surgery consists of Dr. Fleming inserting the titanium post into the jawbone in order to allow it to fuse with the bone. The second surgery is performed when the implant has healed and is ready for the final step of the process, which is the placement of the abutment and crown. It’s important to note that this excludes patients who need supplementary treatments before getting dental implants. Depending on each individual case, the process might be longer and require more than two surgeries.
I have dentures – Can I still upgrade to dental implants?
Yes, it’s possible to upgrade from dentures to dental implants. However, not everyone may qualify for the procedure. If a patient has worn dentures for a long period of time, bone mass deterioration may have occurred. If this is the case, the need for supplementary treatments or other restorative options will have to be considered. It’s important to schedule a consultation with Dr. Fleming in order to determine whether dental implants are the right choice for you.
If I have gum disease can I still get dental implants?
If you currently have gum disease or other oral health problems it’s not possible to get dental implants immediately. Successful dental implant placement starts with good dental health. In saying this, your gum disease must be treated beforehand. After Dr. Fleming has restored your oral health, dental implants can be placed.
How long does the dental implant process take?
The dental implant process varies depending on the patient and their particular case. There is no set time for the process. In some cases, the procedure can be completed in as little as 4 months. However, if a patient needs supplementary treatment, the process might take longer. Other factors that also play a big role on the recovery timeline include how patients manage home care, how fast they recover between surgeries, and their willingness to comply with the doctor’s orders.
